What makes our piano lessons different?
What if….
What if you saw your child play to a packed audience at a concert? The audience is applauding and your child is just thrilled! What if your child was an introvert and can now command a performance in front of his peers? What if your child told you they’d rather practice their instrument instead of scrolling on their phone? What if your child said “Hi Mom! Listen to this!”
These are all true stories we hear at Classic Studios all the time. We are so proud to be a small part of these great memories families can create.
Our piano teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular music. Whether you want to learn Bach or Elton John or Nina Simone, our teachers are happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. Our piano teachers will show you the fundamentals of technique, sight reading and theory, ear training, but they will also incorporate your favourite songs into your lessons.

Piano lessons FAQ
Our piano instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student’s favorite type of music. Whether you’re playing in local bands, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to the piano after many years, we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.
We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country, blues and classical.
Our piano and music instructors have received their education from prestigious institutions such as Macewan University, University of Alberta, SNFU University, University of Arkansas, Humber College, Many have toured the US and Europe, and bring over 25 years of professional performance and teaching experience to your lessons.
Beginner piano students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. Our instructors balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson presents a new technical challenges or theory concept, and ends with something fun, such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of piano method books including our own, and encourage students to bring their smartphone or CDs to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes.
It is ideal if you do have a piano at home before starting lessons, but you can start lessons with our piano teachers by using an electric keyboard to practice on. Most of our students rent or buy small electric keyboards to practice on at home. We recommend a keyboard that has regular sized keys and a touch sensitive response. The term you are looking for is called a “weighted action” or graded hammer action. A touch sensitive keyboard means if you press a key harder it will play louder and if you press a key softer it will play quieter.
One great resource is Costco, located in Sherwood Park. They have an excellent return policy and we can help you find the right model.
Kijiji is a good resource and you can find a piano for around $200 or free. Be careful with pianos that are over 100 years old. Some of them are impossible to tune. Also see if there is any moisture damage in the piano. If you can start to see coffee rings develop at the back of the piano or inside, run away. Also if there is any crack in the sound board, run away. It can be expensive to pay a piano mover (around $450), but worth it unless you have a lot of people, moving straps and a truck! (Which can be done!)
To have the best success, look for the following things in a keyboard:
- 88 keys
- Sustain Pedal (when you hold it down, the sound rings out)
- Weighted action or “graded hammer action” sometimes known as touch sensitive as well. (when you play harder, it sounds louder; when you play softly, it sounds quieter)
